2 of 5 Things Most Recruiters Won’t Tell You

This is one of my main bug bears on CVs (at all levels by the way). People who write general points without substantiating their claims. I want to believe you, but without evidence or data I just don’t. How much more impressive are the statements from yesterday’s post now?

  • I held a sports event and raised £15,000 for a charity
  • I organised an alternative graduation party and earned myself £5000 from ticket sales
  • I’m a published author and have sold 2000 copies of my book
  • I designed and built my own website/app/blog that now has 4000 readers and is here:
  • I started my own business aged 10 and sold sweets at school so I could save up to buy a bicycle. That was my first foray into business, but not the last…
  • I worked for a marketing agency in my summer breaks for a total of 16 weeks and have been invited back again this summer (but now I’d like to get a paying job!)
  • I published the university magazine / website that had a circulation of 10,000 and I grew it to 12,000
  • I represented England in the Netball championships and my team came 3rd out of 20

This is a good lesson to learn and hold on to through out your marketing career. The more you can support your argument with statistics, data, images and examples the better response you will get. These statements make me much more likely to want to talk to the person. Providing the data highights your intelligence, telling the story shows your personality and the numbers show you have commercial nous.

Do you get the idea?

Tomorrow we’ll look at how you tell the story. Until then.
