My name is pinksheep website - marketing assistantElla and I work as a Marketing Assistant for PinkSheep, they are a print management company and I have been working there for 3 months.

1. How did you get your first role as a Marketing Assistant Ella?

I actually managed to get my role through a family connection, which I know is bit cheeky! The application process wasn’t as intense as I know it would have been if I was finding the job myself.

2. What’s the most challenging thing about your new job?

The most challenging thing about my role at the moment is the fact that I don’t have any other marketing experience to speak of as I didn’t study marketing and I’ve been lucky enough to get this role as my first role without having to get work experience first. I went into this job as a blank canvas and have been learning everything about marketing along the way. To do this I have used a few online courses, including the Digital Marketing For Grads course. It was great for me as it was solely focused on digital marketing. I have to say that the fact that I am starting from scratch is a bit daunting!

3. What do you enjoy most about being a Marketing Assistant?

The thing that I enjoy most about this role is actually all the learning I’m having to do, and then implementing it. It can be a challenge to apply the things that I am learning to PinkSheep as some of the courses have a generic strategy and so don’t necessarily apply to everything I’m asked to do. I’ve really enjoyed learning about how and why websites appear on the search engine results pages and how we, as marketers, can optimise content so that it appears in Google and is relevant and helpful for our target audience.

4. What do your daily tasks involve?

At the moment, because I’m still learning the ropes and taking the training courses I don’t have a daily routine or tasks. I don’t think lunch counts? But I imagine that will change very soon. PinkSheep have been really patient and I really value the training opportunities that they are giving me.

5. What’s it like to work in an office environment having just left college?

The PinkSheep office is in South London, luckily I don’t have to travel into manic London everyday! In the office there are about eight of us that work here everyday, it’s a small but mighty team. The office is quite quirky and our Monday morning meetings take place on beanbags. Theres quite a laid back atmosphere to the office and we dress pretty casually. I love the PinkSheep team, they’re all really friendly and were so welcoming when I arrived. Because the team is not super big, it means that we are all quite good friends and just makes the dynamic at work so much more enjoyable and we all have quite a good laugh together.

6. What are your top tips for someone wanting to work as a Marketing Assistant?

One of the tips I would give to someone looking to work in marketing is to keep up to date with the news and social platforms. One of my roles is going to be to update all the social media platforms daily, and I’ve learnt that more often than not, a timely and relevant tweet performs better than a sales tweet, so it’s important that I know about the big events that are going on in the world and the topics that are trending so that I can be relevant. I also don’t think there is any problem with not knowing something, there are so many courses available online, so if you don’t know a lot about a certain topic, invest in a course because it will make you feel more confident and make you prepared.
